Documenting migration at home

Someone told me once that best stories are those made from our own land. By then, I was not convinced.

I always thought that projects made as an outsider are moved by more motivation, rigour and transparency. Egypt, Darfur, Ethiopia and Peru were detached from boredom that meant working at home. But perhaps now I see things differently.

When a documentary happens in our own environment, as I am now starting with migrants and refugees who live and fight in Barcelona, pleasant surprises show up. Knowing well what newcomers face in Catalonia, knowing streets and people that often frighten foreigners, give me confidence and I am also certain to do something important and worthy for my society.

We may not need to go far to develop good and interesting stories. If working abroad inspires, being at home makes a lot of sense.
