Flying kites into ‘haboobs’

Nowadays we meet two basic conditions for children to fly kites in Darfur: the school holidays and the season of haboobs, those wind and sand storms that happen almost daily. Made of straws and wrapped with pieces of plastic bags, kites are common in Darfur, even in camps for displaced people. As in the bestselling novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, these toys fly in a turbulent and bloody region, but I believe they are also projecting dreams of new generations in Darfur who want a future with freedom.
