Time for bad news

After the recent outbreak of an armed conflict, bad news in South Sudan are repeatedly reported

Some editors and colleagues told me that the stories I have photographed in the recent weeks are too repetitive: severely malnourished children, mass displacements, clinics overwhelmed by unexpected epidemics, war wounded, sexual victims… One day after another there are the same images, the same disappointed faces in South Sudan, a country that has lost all hope. If this is news, we can’t ignore it or leave it alone just because it’s too repetitive. Aren’t repetitive sports headlines every week? Aren’t repetitive the constant candidate Truman’s nonsense actions? What about the yearly summer holidays of Hollywood actors and actresses?

A few days ago, my colleague Xavier Aldekoa, when he ended his visit in Juba, told me that this time he had no choice but to talk about the bad stereotypes of Africa to describe this country: poverty, hunger, violence. “I’m sorry, but now I see no other reality,” he concluded.
