A short break in crisis

We should consider this summer as a short break. We are coming from difficult years in which the pandemic and droughts have determined our months of vacation. We should remember that not long ago we were celebrating major festivals with masks and keeping social distance and, even more recently, fruit trees and entire cereal farms were dying due to lack of water in our lakes. It seems this year we are freed from all these shocks and we should breathe deeply. We are breathing because we will need to face a future that, for sure, will bring more pandemics and more droughts, as intense or more intense than those from the past, combined with other negative episodes that will make past times (this summer 2024) much better.

This is not meant to be an apocalyptic opinion. It is a claim to become aware that well-being and wealth are increasingly sought. To have an assurance it will be necessary for all of us to assume a responsible attitude. It is a global responsibility.

In a world where a war in Europe causes famine in Africa, where a pandemic can spread across the globe in a matter of days and last for years, and where carbon emissions from anywhere, even in Catalonia, are causing sea levels to rise worldwide, the threat of collapse affecting us all cannot be overstated. The only effective solution for these risks is cooperation. Cooperation between members of a community, a town, a city, a country, and even the international cooperation. By putting aside selfishness, individualism and culture for the sake of immediacy lies our hope for an equitable and resilient future. It is our obligation as human beings.
