Photography has a magical side. Apart from being an activity that requires work, dedication and constant training, there is something else that makes it extraordinary. Some of the factors (not all) that make a good image are not always under photographer’s control and, like it or not, sometimes you need to trust the luck.
This happened to me yesterday in a detention center in El Geneina, West Darfur. When photographing the cells, I had orders to avoid any image of a detained. It was a difficult and limited work. But I did not expect light in those moments, at one in the afternoon, would favor me. Working from within the cell, shadows of the bars filled a wall that otherwise would have been empty and boring.
By luck, a picture that could have been “one more” became a special one. But luck is also for those who seek it…
